Drainage excavation is the work of shaping the ground and installing the channels, swales, and pipe that carry water off a property. In most places, some rain soaks into the soil. In Queen Creek, caliche largely refuses — the cemented hardpan sheds water instead of absorbing it, so runoff has to be moved on the surface or through a designed system to a safe discharge point.
This matters most during monsoon season, when a storm can drop inches of rain in an hour.
